Manufacturing in the News

Manufacturing in the newsAmerican manufacturing has been in the news a lot lately, and not just because of its impressive recent job gains. People other than economists are beginning to talk about manufacturing, and they’re starting to say things other than “there are no manufacturing jobs in the U.S.”

In the past 2 weeks, many news reports have noted the worker conditions in the Chinese factories that produce telecommunications devices for companies like HP, Motorola and, famously, Apple. These conditions have horrified many of the commenters on the news stories, and a consistent theme that comes up in the stories is: these conditions are the result of the absence of laws like we have in the U.S.

This is a great chance for American manufacturers to point out that while environmental and worker-protection regulations can be cumbersome to comply with and enforce, the result is a much healthier, stable workforce that would not threaten mass suicides to protest their working conditions.

Last month, President Obama explicitly pointed out how crucial manufacturing is, not just to employment, but to the overall strength of the nation itself. His economic plan involves disincentives for American companies to offshore and incentives for offshored companies to return to the U.S., though support for that plan varies. Of course, the candidates for the Republican nomination are also highlighting manufacturing as well, conducting speeches and rallies in factories and plants.

Regardless of the outcome of any political race, American manufacturing has a lot to be proud of right now: we stand in stark contrast to factories overseas in how we treat our workers; we added almost 25% of the total new jobs to the economy last month, and Presidential candidates are acknowledging the vital importance of manufacturing.
